How to Detox Your Life

Welcome to 2019! If you haven’t noticed I went a little MIA towards the end of 2018 until now, on here and on social media. I really wanted to focus on time with my family during the Holiday season and it was also a really hectic time for me mentally and emotionally. I was finishing up my first semester of Grad School and also going through a lot of changes in my personal life so I went into 2019 with the intention of making it a year about me. I know how that sounds, very selfish, BUT I decided I needed to be selfish for me. I need to spend the year bettering myself so that I can be better for others. So what was the first thing I did to start my year? DETOX. A full life detox. What does that entail exactly? Well, I am about to tell you everything I did to make sure I started the year off on the right foot!

I want to start by saying that I had basically a full month with nothing to do, so that made it a lot easier for me to fully do all of this. I don’t expect everyone to be able to do this as extensively as I did, but I hope you can take little bits and pieces of each thing and apply it to your life in your way.

  1. Social Detox

    My social detox was extreme but MUCH needed. I turned my phone on airplane mode for 5 days. Actually all electronics. Basically everyone who needed to know where I was did and it allowed me to really focus on some of my thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. I wasn’t scrolling through my instagram comparing myself to other people, I wasn’t scrolling through pinterest imagining a life that isn’t mine, and I wasn’t constantly checking my phone for texts, DMs, snapchats or anything else. I fully disconnected. I went outside, I read books, I took up a new hobby and honestly I never felt better. When I finally turned my phone back on, what I noticed was that I didn’t feel the need to see what everyone was up to on instagram. I could leave my phone in another room for hours and not miss it, and I wasn’t mindlessly scrolling before bed or when I wake up instead of doing something productive. Now I know what you are thinking, you can’t just turn your phone off, I get it, but maybe try limiting your time on apps or don’t check instagram before you even get out of bed. Maybe delete an app you find yourself constantly on for a few days! I’m telling you it will make a big difference for your productivity and your mind.

  2. Physical Detox

    What do I mean by a physical detox? Detox all the bad food you ate over the holidays, workout, get your endorphins flowing, and cleanse all the toxins from your body. Most of you probably chose some kind of resolution to eat healthier or workout more so this one is probably up everyones alley and already on your mind! Working out is going to make you feel so much better not matter the intensity of your workouts just get your body moving whether that’s a walk outside, a run, yoga, weight lighting whatever you feel your body needs. Same goes with healthy eating. Eating healthy after a workout is going to make you feel even better. Also, you need those healthy nutritious foods to fuel your body for those workouts. If you are struggling with staying on track my advice is to try to commit to at least one good meal a day, preferably breakfast because your first good choice of the day is going to set the tone for the rest of the day.

  3. Mental Detox

    Sometimes you need a little mental break. You need a little you time. Take a few minutes of your day to spend with yourself. Do 10 minutes of yoga. Do a daily devotional. Meditate for 10 minutes. Spend a few minutes to write in a journal. Whatever you need to do to clear your mind and get re-centered for your day or week do it and do it for you. Your mind will thank you, I have found a lot of peace meditating and journaling.

  4. Finally Pamper Yourself

    What do you like to do that makes you feel pampered? Get your nails done? Get a massage? Get a facial? Again, do something for yourself, take care of yourself. Now you can also do some of this in your own home. I love taking a long shower, putting a face mask on and sitting with a good book. I have become obsessed with the Summer Fridays Overtime Mask and Jet Lag Mask. I have seen a significant change in my skin with just a few uses. The Overtime mask is an exfoliator and has so many amazing natural ingredients that are going to deeply cleanse the skin and help reduce dark marks and scars. The Jet Lag is a mask for intense hydration! I love that it can be used as a moisturizer or a mask and your skin is going to thank you! It’s like a big glass of water for your skin. (P.S. So go ahead! Do a social detox, detox your body, detox your mind, detox your skin, pamper yourself! Do whatever it is that is going to make you happier and make you a better version of you so that you can go out and conquer your goals whether they be short or long term. Detox your life!
